What Will Block My Pores?

When you're fighting acne with products, you really want to make sure those same products aren't making things worse. Some products are built different and are just not made to help with acne. You'll want to stay away from those.

Non-Comedogenic Products Are Essential

I know, mouthful of a word, but in general this word is going to become one of your best friends as you look to choose products.

In general, you want to avoid things that will block your pores. When your pores get clogged, acne is much more likely to occur. The terminology for products that don’t clog pores is NON-COMEDOGENIC. Some products will try to feature this as a marketing bullet on their products. The kicker is that some won’t, so you’ll have to pull out the magnifying glass and look for ingredients. Huge pain, we know, so we’ll try to help you below:

Key Ingredients to Avoid

We wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to understand the products you’re putting on your face, so we worked with our dermatologists to compile a simple list of ingredients you want to be on the lookout for that might make your skin worse:

  • Alcohol: We’re talking about the stuff that kills bacteria kind. This is sometimes a common ingredient in skincare products and concealers. It dries out your skin and can cause wrinkles overtime (i.e. avoid at all costs unless you’re actively trying to make yourself age to get into bars quicker).

  • Coconut oil

  • Laureth-4

  • Ethylhexyl palmitate

  • Isopropyl myristate,

  • Sodium laureth sulfate,

  • Myristyl myristate ,

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate,

  • Potassium chloride:

  • Fragrance: Like alcohol, perfumed products could irritate your skin.

Use Products for What They're Made For

These aren’t just ingredients you should avoid in your skin care products, they’re ingredients you should avoid in all products you put on your face. So, my dude, hand soap for face wash? Four in one body scrub/conditioner/shampoo/hemorrhoid cream combos? Hand sanitizer? ALL ARE NOT THINGS YOU SHOULD BE USING TO CLEAN YOUR FACE.
